About XV files
The .XV file extension is most commonly a Xunlei Video file. These files are generated by Xunlei, a dominant Chinese download manager and peer-to-peer sharing client. When downloading video streams from Chinese media platforms, the software encodes the video into this proprietary .XV container. A secondary use for the .XV extension relates to legacy raster graphics, specifically Khoros VIFF (Visualization Image File Format) files or standard images associated with the historic XV Image Viewer program for Unix.
The primary disadvantage of a Xunlei .XV file is its heavily restricted nature. It is a closed, proprietary, and frequently DRM-protected format. You cannot play a .XV video natively on Windows, macOS, or standard media players like VLC. Opening it usually requires the proprietary Xunlei Kankan player or an active network connection to verify the stream's license. This forces users into a walled garden, dealing with heavy client software, ads, and total incompatibility with smart TVs or mobile devices.
To regain control of your media, you should convert .XV files to standard video formats like MP4 or MKV. Converting to MP4 ensures maximum compatibility across web browsers, smartphones, and standalone hardware players. If you are dealing with the legacy XV Image format, you should convert it to JPG or PNG for modern desktop viewing.
Because .XV videos are often encrypted or heavily wrapped by the client, standard online converters often fail to process them. Often, only the original Xunlei software can properly read or export the video data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. Our tool will inspect the binary structure. If the file is a DRM-free wrapper or an older XV raster image, we can extract the underlying payload and convert it safely.

The XV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XV converter.
