Developers originally used tools like XuiCanvas within the official Xbox SDK to create and edit these files. Because they dictate complex game engine logic, they are highly specialized. The main disadvantage of the .XUI format is its proprietary nature. Standard web browsers and design software cannot natively render or interpret the specific XML tags used by these engines. Furthermore, viewing the actual graphical output requires the original game engine or development kit, making it difficult for casual users and modders to work with them.
Users typically need to convert or inspect .XUI files when modding games or extracting UI designs. The most realistic conversion targets are XML or TXT. Extracting the text allows developers to read the underlying code, adjust values, and repackage the file for the game.
