About XUI files
The .XUI file type is primarily a User Interface layout definition used by the Xbox 360 console and its software development kit (SDK). These files dictate the visual structure, button placement, and animation triggers for the Xbox dashboard and custom homebrew applications (like Aurora or Freestyle Dash). While they are technically based on XML, they are often compiled into a binary format to optimize performance on the console's limited memory, making them unreadable in standard text editors. A secondary use exists within the anime-golf MMO PangYa, where .XUI files serve a similar role in defining game menus.
Users typically need to convert .XUI files when modding games, creating custom dashboard skins, or localizing interface text. The biggest obstacle is that binary .XUI files appear as garbled text in Notepad, and opening them requires the discontinued Xbox 360 SDK or niche community tools like XuiTool and XuiWorkshop. For editing, the best workflow is converting the binary .XUI to standard XML, which allows for human-readable text modification. For asset recovery, users often need to extract referenced textures to PNG or DDS formats using specialized archive tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XUI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XUI file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use Visual Studio or similar software from the "Xbox 360 Interface Layout" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to XUI, try Visual Studio or another comparable tool in the "Xbox 360 Interface Layout" category.
The XUI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XUI converter.
