Convert XUF to another file type
To convert XUF projects and firmware to another format, you need Highway Capacity Software (HCS) or other Data software.

About XUF files
The .XUF extension primarily identifies project files created by McTrans Highway Capacity Software (HCS), specifically for the Freeways module. These files store traffic engineering data - such as lane geometry, flow rates, and Level of Service (LOS) calculations - structured in an XML format.
While the XML foundation makes the data theoretically accessible, the practical reality is proprietary lock-in. The complex schema (nested tags for segments, ramps, and weaving areas) makes the raw text nearly unreadable without the HCS interface. Stakeholders without a costly HCS license cannot view the visual analysis. Additionally, version mismatches between HCS releases (e.g., HCS7 vs. HCS2010) often cause "File Read Error" notifications.
To bypass these restrictions, users often need to convert .XUF data. For reporting, the standard workflow is converting to PDF via the software's print function. For data manipulation, because it is text-based, you can rename the file to XML or TXT and import it into Microsoft Excel (via the XML Data Source feature) to analyze the raw metrics.
Warning: A significant minority of .XUF files are binary firmware updates for satellite receivers using ALI Corp chipsets. These are not text-readable; converting or editing them will corrupt the firmware checksum and may permanently damage the receiver hardware.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XUF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XUF file to , you can use Highway Capacity Software (HCS) or similar software from the "Highway Capacity Analysis Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The XUF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XUF converter.
