About XTL files
The .XTL file format is a proprietary data container originally developed by Pterodon for the 2003 tactical shooter video game Vietcong. These files serve as internal game archives, storing a wide variety of essential assets such as 3D models, level scripts, textures, and audio clips.
Because .XTL is a closed-source format hardcoded for a specific game engine, you cannot open it using standard desktop software, media players, or web browsers. Traditional online converters fail to process these files because the archive structure and compression methods are undocumented and highly specific. Users typically interact with these files only when attempting to mod the game, which requires downloading obscure, community-built unpacking tools.
While direct conversion of an entire archive into a single format (like PDF or JPG) is impossible, you can still inspect the file safely. If our analysis detects standard embedded formats within the archive, partial viewing or extraction may still be possible without downloading questionable modding utilities.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XTL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XTL file to TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use Vietcong or similar software from the "Game Asset Archive Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to XTL, try Vietcong or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset Archive Storage" category.
The XTL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XTL converter.
