About XR files
The .XR file format primarily stores compiled game data for the X-Ray Engine, developed by GSC Game World for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game series. In this context, it holds material libraries, particle effects, and environmental configurations. Alternatively, it serves as a visual preset file for the Red Giant Trapcode Suite used in video editing. To open and edit the game files, users rely on specialized, community-developed modding tools. Trapcode presets require host applications like Adobe After Effects with the Red Giant plugin installed. Users often need to convert game-related .XR files to extract 3D assets or configuration data into accessible formats like OBJ, FBX, or XML for modding or porting to modern game engines. The primary disadvantage of the .XR format is its heavily proprietary and binary nature. It is completely locked to its parent software, requires expensive licenses (in the case of Red Giant), and is unreadable by web browsers or standard text editors. Converting these files typically results in the loss of engine-specific shading parameters or complex particle physics behaviors. This format is notoriously difficult to process because standard online converters lack the specific binary parsing libraries required to decode these assets. Only the original software or dedicated community extractors can properly read or export the data. Our system inspects the file headers to determine the exact type of .XR file you have. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XR file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use X-Ray Engine or similar software from the "Game Data & Plugin Presets" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to XR, try X-Ray Engine or another comparable tool in the "Game Data & Plugin Presets" category.
The XR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XR converter.
