About XMDX files
.XMDX files are secure, encrypted data containers generated by ExamSoft Examplify, the assessment platform used by major universities and bar examiners. These files serve as the digital "blue book," storing a student's finalized answers, exam logs, and device snapshots.
Users typically encounter these files when digging through backup folders (such as C:\ProgramData\Examplify\STBackups) in a panic, trying to confirm their exam was saved or uploaded correctly. The main drawback is that .XMDX files are strictly locked down: you cannot double-click to open them in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat. They use proprietary encryption to prevent cheating, meaning a direct conversion to readable text is technically impossible without the institution's private key.
However, the file format itself is based on the standard ZIP architecture. A pragmatic workaround for verification is to rename the file extension from .XMDX to ZIP. This allows you to extract the container and inspect the internal structure - typically revealing an encrypted answer.xml file. While you cannot read the essay content, seeing a non-zero file size confirms that data was written to the disk, offering peace of mind. For a readable PDF copy, you must rely on the specific "Student Review" features within the ExamSoft portal, as no third-party converter can bypass the encryption legally or technically.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XMDX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XMDX file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use Examplify or similar software from the "Secure Exam Answer File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The XMDX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMDX converter.
