About XMA files
The .XMA file type is the proprietary Xbox Media Audio format, developed by Microsoft specifically for the Xbox 360 console. While technically based on the WMA Pro architecture, these files are heavily optimized for console hardware, often utilizing custom blocking and missing the standard headers required by PC media players.
The Problem: Because .XMA files are designed for the Xbox audio driver, they are practically unusable on standard operating systems. Trying to open them in generic players like Windows Media Player or VLC usually results in an error or static noise. Modders and gamers extracting audio from game discs often find themselves stuck with thousands of unplayable files.
The Solution: To listen to game soundtracks or use voice lines in video projects, you must convert these files.
For Editing & Archiving: Convert to WAV. This preserves the uncompressed stream (decoded from the XMA source) without further quality loss.
For Listening: Convert to MP3 or AAC for broad compatibility with phones and web players.
At convert.guru, we handle the specific header reconstruction needed to decode XMA streams, allowing you to drag, drop, and convert immediately.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your XMA file.

The XMA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMA converter.
