The .XLW file extension represents a Microsoft Excel Workspace, a legacy configuration file used to save the screen layout, window positions, and references of multiple open workbooks. Crucially, an .XLW file usually does not contain the actual spreadsheet data; it functions as a "map" that points to other XLS or XLSX files on your computer. If you email an .XLW file to a colleague without the linked workbook files, they will likely see an error or a blank interface because the source data is missing.
A notable exception exists: in Excel 4.0 (released in 1992), the .XLW format was used as a standard Workbook that did contain data (sheets and charts).
