The .XLT file format is a legacy template used by Microsoft Excel to store default formatting, formulas, macro code, and cell layouts. Based on the proprietary Microsoft Compound Document binary format, .XLT files were the standard for saving reusable spreadsheets from Excel 97 up to Excel 2003.

Furthermore, .XLT files are strictly limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns, which is inadequate for modern datasets.
