About XLT files

The .XLT file format is a legacy template used by Microsoft Excel to store default formatting, formulas, macro code, and cell layouts. By using a template, users can generate multiple spreadsheet documents with identical base structures. Based on the proprietary Microsoft Compound Document binary format, .XLT files were the standard for saving reusable spreadsheets from Excel 97 up to Excel 2003.

You can still open these files using Microsoft Office desktop applications or open-source alternatives like LibreOffice Calc. However, relying on .XLT files today presents significant compatibility and security hurdles. Because it is an aging binary format rather than a modern XML-based structure, an .XLT file is more prone to silent data corruption and cannot be easily parsed by web applications. Modern office suites often block or flag them with security warnings due to their historical vulnerability to macro viruses. Furthermore, .XLT files are strictly limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns, which is inadequate for modern datasets.

Converting .XLT files is the best way to ensure long-term usability and eliminate security risks. For active editing and daily use, convert your templates to the modern XLTX (XML-based template) or XLSX (standard workbook). If you need to extract the raw template data for database integration, convert to CSV. For archiving the visual layout, PDF is the most reliable target. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The XLT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XLT converter.
