About XLT files
The .XLT file extension represents a legacy spreadsheet template created by Microsoft Excel versions 97 through 2003. These files serve as blueprints for generating new XLS workbooks, preserving formatting, formulas, and layouts (like invoices or budget planners) to ensure consistency across multiple documents.
While still functional, the .XLT format relies on the proprietary Microsoft Compound File Binary Format, which introduces significant friction in modern workflows. Unlike the modern XML-based XLTX, these binary files are larger, more prone to corruption, and often trigger "Protected View" or "Compatibility Mode" warnings in newer versions of Microsoft Excel due to security risks associated with legacy macros. Furthermore, mobile viewers and cloud-based editors like Google Sheets may offer limited support for binary templates compared to open standards.
To modernize your workflow, we recommend converting .XLT files based on your specific needs:
For Modern Editing: Convert to XLTX (modern template) or XLSX (standard workbook) to utilize features like larger grid sizes and dynamic arrays.
For Data Extraction: Convert to CSV to strip away formatting and access the raw data.
For Sharing & Archiving: Convert to .PDF/A to lock the layout and ensure the document looks identical on any device, bypassing the need for spreadsheet software entirely.
For Web Use: Convert to HTML to display tables directly in a browser.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your XLT file.
If you want to convert XLT file to XLTX, JSON, YAML, YML, TOML, INI or CFG, you can use Microsoft Excel or similar software from the "Legacy Spreadsheet Template" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, SQLITE, SQL, ACCDB, YAML, MDB or JSON files to XLT, try Microsoft Excel or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Spreadsheet Template" category.
The XLT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XLT converter.
