About XLL files
An .XLL file is a compiled Microsoft Excel Add-in. Developers use these files to add custom functions, interfaces, and tools to Microsoft Excel. The internal format is fundamentally a Portable Executable (PE), similar to a standard DLL or EXE file, built specifically for the Excel C API. There are severe disadvantages to the .XLL format. It is a proprietary, compiled binary. This makes it impossible to open in a standard text editor or web browser. It is strictly platform-dependent; a 32-bit add-in will crash on a 64-bit installation of Excel. Furthermore, because these files execute native machine code, they present a massive security risk and are frequently blocked by email filters. Users often try to convert an .XLL file to inspect its code or extract its embedded resources. Because it is a compiled executable, you cannot convert it into a standard XLSX spreadsheet. Standard online converters fail completely because they expect document data, not machine code. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XLL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XLL file to DLL, SO, DYLIB, BUNDLE, PLUGIN, XPI, CRX, SAFARIEXTZ, APPEX, KEXT, SYS or DRV, you can use Microsoft Excel or similar software from the "Excel Add-in Executable" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LV2, DYLIB, VST, AAX, DRV, TDE, LADSPA, BUNDLE, AU, DLL, RTAS or SO files to XLL, try Microsoft Excel or another comparable tool in the "Excel Add-in Executable" category.
The XLL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XLL converter.
