About XLD files
If you have an .XLD file, you are likely dealing with one of two distinct legacy or industrial formats that are notoriously difficult to use in modern environments. The most common variation is a data export from Sympatec particle analysis systems (like WINDOX or PAQXOS). These files contain critical size distribution measurements but are locked inside a proprietary structure, making them impossible to visualize in standard tools like Tableau or Microsoft Excel without conversion. The friction here is interoperability; you have the data, but you can't graph it or share it.
The second common variant is the Excel Dialog Sheet, a relic from Excel 5.0/95. Before modern VBA UserForms existed, these files defined custom pop-up windows. Today, they are a liability: opening them in modern Excel often triggers "Protected View" security blocks, and the layout features are deprecated, making them uneditable. Users also encounter .XLD files in industrial automation, where they serve as XML-based Ladder Logic exchange files for Schneider Electric PLCs, incompatible with text editors.
To solve these access issues, the best conversion strategy depends on your intent. For Sympatec data, convert to CSV or XLSX to regain control of your numbers. For legacy Excel dialogs, convert to PDF for visual archiving or XLSM to attempt logic recovery. For Schneider PLC files, converting to TXT or XML renders the logic human-readable.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XLD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XLD file to DB, SQLITE, SQLITE3, MDB, ACCDB, DBF, ODB, FDB, GDB, MYD, FRM or SQL, you can use Sympatec WINDOX or similar software from the "Particle Analysis Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert NDF, SQLITE3, BAK, RDB, SQL, DB4, MDF, MDB, LDF, DB, DB3 or SQLITE files to XLD, try Sympatec WINDOX or another comparable tool in the "Particle Analysis Data" category.
The XLD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XLD converter.
