Convert XIN to another file type
To convert XIN files to another format, you need Bentley InRoads or other Settings software.
Convert a file to XIN
To convert other file formats to the "Civil Design Configuration" file type, you need software like Bentley InRoads or a similar tool.
About XIN files
A .XIN file is primarily known as a Bentley InRoads Preferences File, a specialized XML-based format used by legacy civil engineering software from Bentley Systems. These files act as the configuration backbone for infrastructure projects, storing critical definitions for feature styles, named symbology, and survey data processing rules. A secondary, less common use of the extension is for EDI Invoice files used by Ingram Micro for electronic commerce transactions.
The main challenge with .XIN files is their proprietary application within the Bentley ecosystem. While technically human-readable XML, the data structure is deeply nested and complex, making it difficult to audit or edit in a standard text editor. Users migrating to modern platforms like OpenRoads Designer often face friction because the .XIN format has been largely superseded by DGN Libraries (.DGNLib). Engineers typically need to "convert" these files by importing them into newer software to preserve years of standardized project settings. For the Ingram Micro variant, the challenge is simply viewing the raw invoice data without specialized EDI software.
To manage these files, the best conversion targets depend on your goal. For auditing Bentley preferences, convert or rename the file to XML to view it in a web browser or Excel. For standardizing legacy data, use the import tools in OpenRoads Designer to convert the .XIN content into a modern .DGNLib. If you are dealing with an Ingram Micro invoice, convert the file to PDF for easy reading or CSV for importing into accounting systems.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XIN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XIN file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Bentley InRoads or similar software from the "Civil Engineering Preferences" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to XIN, try Bentley InRoads or another comparable tool in the "Civil Engineering Preferences" category.
The XIN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XIN converter.
