About XFN files

The .XFN file is a legacy printer font format originally developed for Ventura Publisher. It was primarily used by early desktop publishing (DTP) software to send typographical data and glyph rendering instructions directly to compatible hardware printers, such as vintage Xerox laser printers.

Historically, users managed these files within Corel Ventura, a pioneering page layout application for MS-DOS and early Windows environments. The core disadvantage of the .XFN format today is its severe obsolescence. It is a strictly proprietary format, unsupported by modern operating systems, and cannot be installed via the standard Windows or macOS font managers. Users who discover these files in old project archives are completely locked out of the typography, as opening them natively requires running discontinued software on legacy virtual machines.

When attempting to modernize old desktop publishing assets, the ideal conversion targets are standard vector fonts like TTF (TrueType) or OTF (OpenType). Converting to these formats ensures cross-platform compatibility and usability in modern design software like Adobe Illustrator. However, because .XFN is a closed, undocumented binary format, standard online converters consistently fail to parse its glyph mapping data. Often, only the original Corel typesetting engine can properly read or export the font metrics.

Despite these massive limitations, you do not need a vintage PC to inspect the file. If our analysis detects standard font data structures embedded within the file, viewing or extracting the typographical information may still be achievable.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XFN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted W30, DIS and WPG files.
