About DIS files

A .DIS file is most commonly an Oracle Discoverer Workbook. It stores business intelligence queries, reports, and data visualization layouts. It relies on the Microsoft Compound File Binary Format. Because the extension is heavily fragmented, other software also uses .DIS, including GEO-SLOPE for geotechnical analysis plots (which are internally PostScript files), Directory Opus for icon sets (which are standard ZIP archives), and RSI DISCUS for technical data packages (XML format).

The primary software for viewing the workbooks is Oracle Discoverer. However, Oracle ended premier support for Discoverer in 2014, making the format effectively obsolete.

You need to convert this file because the native format is highly proprietary and no longer supported. Discoverer workbooks cannot be opened by modern web browsers or standard spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel without proper exporting. Running legacy Oracle environments just to open a report is expensive and poses serious security risks. Furthermore, if your .DIS is a GEO-SLOPE plot, it requires PostScript interpreters like Ghostscript, which average users do not have installed.
