About XDT files
The .XDT file extension represents several distinct data formats, most commonly a measurement data file created by the KEYENCE NR-500 Data Logger. It can also function as an XML-based Termbase definition file for SDL MultiTerm, a Microsoft Visual Studio XML Document Transform file, or a German medical data exchange archive (KBV xDT).
Depending on the origin, you need specific software to open these files. For KEYENCE data, the proprietary WAVE LOGGER software is required. Termbase files are handled by SDL Trados Studio, while Microsoft transform files open in standard text editors or Visual Studio.
Users frequently need to convert .XDT files because they are tied to expensive, niche ecosystems. KEYENCE data files are useless without the specific logger software, making it difficult to share measurement data with colleagues who rely on standard spreadsheet tools. SDL MultiTerm files are restricted to the Trados environment, which limits accessibility for clients without translation software.
The best conversion targets depend on the internal structure. Data logger and medical files should ideally be exported to CSV or XLSX for data analysis. Termbase and Visual Studio files are already formatted as XML, meaning they can be converted to plain TXT for basic viewing, though structural metadata might lose its software-specific utility.
Many .XDT formats, particularly KEYENCE and eXtremeDB exports, are closed, proprietary, or compressed (like zlib or ZIP). This makes them notoriously difficult to open or convert with standard online tools. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like XML or ZIP, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XDT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XDT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XDT converter.
