About XCM files

The .XCM file extension is primarily used for three completely different purposes: a gliding computer map for XCSoar, a network configuration snapshot for the Nokia Network Services Platform, or a proprietary electrocardiogram (ECG) data file generated by Holter monitors like those from GE HealthCare.

If your file is an XCSoar map, it is essentially a standard ZIP archive containing terrain, topology, and waypoint data for glider pilots. If it comes from a Nokia network switch, it is an XML file storing device configurations. However, if you received this file from a hospital, it contains raw cardiac data. Patients often try to open these medical files at home but face strict software limitations. Medical .XCM files are notoriously difficult to convert because they require expensive, proprietary clinic software to export the raw data to a readable PDF.

Standard online converters fail to process .XCM files because the extension is shared across open-source aviation software, enterprise telecommunications, and strictly regulated medical devices. They cannot differentiate between a compressed archive, plain text, and locked medical data.

If you need to access an aviation map, the best workaround is to rename the extension to ZIP and extract the contents. For Nokia files, simply rename them to XML or TXT. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (like ZIP or XML), viewing or extracting the data will be instantly available.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XCM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MAP, LMU and DD2VTT files.

The XCM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XCM converter.
