Extract text from Ubisoft game textures (XBT)

The .XBT file extension is primarily a compiled game texture used by Ubisoft in titles like Far Cry 5 running on the Dunia Engine. It stores heavily compressed 2D textures - such as character skins, weapon decals, or environment surfaces - optimized for rapid loading into console or PC memory. A secondary use is the Xbox 360 Texture Archive linked to the Microsoft Xbox 360 SDK. Rarely, it functions as a SMART Notebook Template File by SMART Technologies.
The major disadvantage of game-based .XBT files is that they are proprietary and closed-source. You cannot open them in standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. They are essentially "baked" assets intended only to be read by the specific game engine. Standard online converters will fail because the internal image data is wrapped in custom, engine-specific headers.
When successfully extracted, modders usually convert them to standard image formats like DDS (DirectDraw Surface), PNG, or TGA to edit the textures.
