About XBT files

The .xbt extension is shared between two completely different worlds: high-fidelity game textures and educational classroom templates.

1. Ubisoft Game Texture (Far Cry 5, New Dawn)

Most users encounter .xbt files when digging into the data archives of Ubisoft games like Far Cry 5 or Far Cry New Dawn. These are compiled texture files used by the Dunia engine.

The Problem: You cannot open these directly in standard image viewers like Windows Photos or editors like Adobe Photoshop. They are essentially standard DDS (DirectDraw Surface) images wrapped in a proprietary Ubisoft header that blocks normal software from reading them.

The Solution: To edit or view these textures, you must convert them to DDS. The community-standard tool is FCBConverter (Far Cry Binary Converter). Once converted to DDS, you can open them in Photoshop (with the NVIDIA Texture Tools plugin) or GIMP.

2. SMART Notebook Template

In an educational setting, an .xbt file is a template used by SMART Notebook, the software powering interactive whiteboards in classrooms. These files store pre-designed page layouts, themes, and interactive elements to help teachers create lessons faster.

The Problem: These are strictly proprietary. You cannot open them in Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides without first processing them through the SMART software.

The Solution: Open the file in SMART Notebook. From there, you can save it as a standard NOTEBOOK lesson file or export the slides to PDF or PPTX for wider compatibility.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XBT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, BLUE, HAZ and TWI files.

The XBT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XBT converter.
