About XBEL files

The .XBEL file extension identifies a bookmark file formatted in the XML Bookmark Exchange Language. Developed by the Python XML Special Interest Group, this open standard was designed to create a universal, vendor-neutral format for sharing internet bookmarks across different browsers and tools. While theoretically superior to proprietary formats due to its structured XML nature, it presents significant friction for modern users. Major browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge do not natively support importing .XBEL files, preferring the Netscape HTML format or internal JSON structures. To make the data usable, you typically need to convert the .XBEL file into a standard HTML bookmark file for browser import, or JSON for programmatic use. For simple archiving or readability, converting to a plain TXT list of URLs is often the most pragmatic solution.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XBEL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HTML, XBRL, XAPK, ABX, QDC and LEF files.

The XBEL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XBEL converter.
