The .XBEL file extension identifies a bookmark file formatted in the XML Bookmark Exchange Language. Developed by the Python XML Special Interest Group, this open standard was designed to create a universal, vendor-neutral format for sharing internet bookmarks across different browsers and tools. While theoretically superior to proprietary formats due to its structured XML nature, it presents significant friction for modern users. Major browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge do not natively support importing .XBEL files, preferring the Netscape HTML format or internal JSON structures. To make the data usable, you typically need to convert the .XBEL file into a standard HTML bookmark file for browser import, or JSON for programmatic use. For simple archiving or readability, converting to a plain TXT list of URLs is often the most pragmatic solution.
