Convert a file to WZ
To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary Game Archive" file type, you need software like MapleStory or a similar tool.
About WZ files
The .WZ file is primarily a proprietary game data package created by Wizet (now Nexon) for the MMORPG MapleStory. It acts as a massive container holding millions of game assets, including 2D sprites, audio tracks, XML configurations, and map structures. Another notable use is for the open-source real-time strategy game Warzone 2100, where it serves as a standard ZIP archive containing game mods and data. A minor use case includes workout data backups for the AllMyWorkouts app, which uses a standard GZ (GZIP) compression.
To interact with MapleStory .WZ files outside the game, players typically rely on third-party community tools like HaRepacker or WzRepacker. The official game client does not provide any native asset browsing capabilities. Warzone 2100 files, however, can be easily opened with any standard archive tool like 7-Zip.
The main disadvantage of the MapleStory .WZ format is that it is highly proprietary and protected by custom encryption algorithms. The developer frequently updates these ciphers to prevent data mining, meaning older community extraction tools break constantly. Furthermore, these files easily exceed several gigabytes, making them incredibly difficult to share, host, or edit locally without enormous system resources.
Users typically want to extract the contents of .WZ files into usable, standard formats. The best conversion targets include PNG for 2D character sprites, MP3 for background music, and XML for statistical item data. When converting, you strip away the proprietary encryption, allowing the raw media to be used in wikis or custom projects.
Because this is a closed, proprietary game archive with strict DRM and continuous encryption changes, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original game engine or actively maintained, specialized decryption software can seamlessly read the data. Even if it is encrypted, we can identify the file format, inspect the internal headers, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like the standard ZIP structure used by Warzone 2100 - viewing or extraction is still possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WZ converter.
