WVL files are primarily associated with proprietary Wavelet Compressed Video recordings generated by various digital video recorder (DVR) systems used for security surveillance. Unlike standard video formats like MP4 or MOV, these files utilize specialized wavelet compression algorithms designed to maximize storage efficiency on hard drives, often at the cost of interoperability. A significant issue for users is that standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player typically cannot open these files without specific, often hard-to-find codecs. In some legacy contexts, a .WVL file may also be a Wavelet Compressed Image created by older versions of Corel software, or occasionally a raw waveform audio file.
Because these files are effectively "locked" to the hardware or proprietary software that created them, sharing footage with law enforcement, insurance companies, or playback on mobile devices is virtually impossible in its native state. For video files, the practical solution is converting them to widely supported formats like MP4 (H.264) or AVI for editing and playback. For image-based WVL files, converting to JPG or PNG ensures the graphic can be opened in modern browsers and design tools.
