About WI files

The .WI file extension most commonly denotes a Wavelet Compressed Image, a proprietary image format originally developed by Summus Ltd and later utilized by Corel. These files employ wavelet compression algorithms to achieve high compression ratios with fewer artifacts than standard JPEGs. Additionally, a smaller subset of .WI files functions as Windows Installer localization data files used by Microsoft Windows to store localized text strings for software installation packages. Working with .WI files today is highly frustrating. As an image format, it is largely obsolete and entirely proprietary. Modern operating systems, web browsers, and standard image viewers cannot natively open .WI files. If it is an installer file, it requires the Microsoft Windows Installer framework to interpret the Microsoft Compound data. Users typically need to convert .WI images into universally supported formats like JPG, PNG, or WEBP to share or view them. Because .WI is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters frequently fail to process it. Usually, only the original legacy software, such as older versions of CorelDRAW, can properly read or export the visual data. However, you can use convert.guru. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects an embedded preview or supported underlying format, viewing or conversion may still be successful.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CSB, ORC and SSB files.

The WI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WI converter.
