About WV files
A .WV file is primarily a WavPack audio file, a unique compression format capable of both lossless and lossy storage. Unlike standard formats like MP3 or FLAC, WavPack features a distinctive "Hybrid Mode" that creates two files: a high-quality lossy file (.wv) and a separate "correction" file (wvc). When kept together, these files allow full lossless playback; if the correction file is missing, the .WV file still plays but at a lower bitrate.
While this architecture is technically impressive for archiving, it can be a hassle for daily listening. .WV files are rarely supported by default on smartphones, car stereos, or smart speakers, often requiring specific players like VLC media player or foobar2000 to open. To ensure your music plays on any device without "missing file" errors, we recommend converting .WV to FLAC for archiving (broad hardware support, lossless) or MP3 for universal portability. Note: A small percentage of .WV files may be Rohde & Schwarz waveform data used in signal engineering, which cannot be converted to audio formats.

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WV converter.
