About WTK files

A .wtk file primarily functions as an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) fiber test trace generated by Wavetek MTS test equipment, such as the MTS-5100. In a minority of cases, it acts as a 3D part file created by Kubotek KeyCreator software for 3D modeling and printing. These files are highly proprietary and lock your data into a specific software ecosystem. The Wavetek OTDR traces contain raw signal reflection data used by field technicians to locate faults in fiber optic cables. Because Wavetek was absorbed by JDSU (now Viavi), modern telecom analysis tools often struggle to read this legacy binary format without specialized legacy software. Similarly, the KeyCreator 3D files lock mechanical designs into a specialized CAD environment, making them impossible to open in standard web browsers and difficult to share with external manufacturers who do not pay for a Kubotek subscription. Users typically need to convert .wtk OTDR traces to SOR (Standard OTDR Record) for universal telecom analysis or to PDF for client reporting. For KeyCreator files, users need to convert them to standard STEP, IGES, or STL formats for 3D printing or importing into mainstream CAD tools. Because .wtk is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the specific geometric or telecom data.
