About WSW files
The .WSW extension primarily refers to firmware update files for OpenBox satellite receivers (e.g., S-series). These are binary dumps containing system instructions, making them notoriously difficult to open or edit on a standard PC. Users typically encounter friction here because the file is not a document; it is a machine-readable blob intended solely for flashing hardware via the Openbox Upgrade Tool. Opening it in a text editor yields gibberish.
A secondary but significant use case (approx. 13%) is the Wassapp for Windows database. Unlike the firmware, this is a standard SQLite database disguised with a .wsw extension. Users recovering old chat logs often struggle to open this file because their OS doesn't recognize the extension.
Conversion Recommendations:
For Firmware: There is no functional "conversion" for viewing. However, if you are attempting to cross-flash compatible hardware, you may need to rename it to BIN or use a hex editor.
For Database (Wassapp): To recover text or chat history, do not use a text editor. Convert this file to CSV or XLSX (Excel) using a database tool, or simply view it by renaming the extension to DB and opening it with DB Browser for SQLite.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WSW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WSW file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Openbox Upgrade Tool or similar software from the "Satellite Receiver Firmware" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to WSW, try Openbox Upgrade Tool or another comparable tool in the "Satellite Receiver Firmware" category.
The WSW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WSW converter.
