About WSH files
A .wsh file is a plain-text configuration file used by the Windows Script Host (WSH) in Microsoft Windows operating systems. It functions similarly to an INI file, storing execution properties and parameters - such as timeout limits and console paths - for running associated scripts like VBScript (VBS) or JScript (JS).
The format presents several real-world disadvantages. It is highly specific to legacy Windows environments and is completely incompatible with non-Windows systems like macOS or Linux. Furthermore, .wsh files are a known security risk; they can be used to silently execute malware without the user realizing a script is running. A common point of confusion is that the file itself does not contain the actual script code, only the runtime settings, frustrating users who expect to find programming logic inside.
Converting .wsh files to TXT or INI is the best target approach, as it allows users to safely inspect the configuration without accidentally executing the script it points to.
Because this is a plain text configuration file tied to a specific OS feature, standard online converters often fail or reject it.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WSH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert WSH file to EXE, MSI, APP, DMG, DEB, RPM, PKG, RUN, SH, BAT, CMD or COM, you can use Windows Script Host or similar software from the "Script Execution Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert JAR, APP, SCR, IPA, COM, AAB, PS1, DMG, VBS, EXE, XAPK or MSI files to WSH, try Windows Script Host or another comparable tool in the "Script Execution Settings" category.
The WSH Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WSH converter.
