About WQ1 files

The .WQ1 file is a legacy spreadsheet format created by Borland for the DOS version of Quattro Pro. These files store grid data, mathematical formulas, cell formatting, and charts. A secondary, highly specific use is as a Will drafting data file generated by Quill Will-Writer or WillsQuest software.

Historically, Quattro Pro was a major competitor to Lotus 1-2-3 and early versions of Microsoft Excel. You can still open .WQ1 files natively using Corel WordPerfect Office, which includes the modern Windows version of Quattro Pro.

However, keeping data in a .WQ1 format today is highly impractical. It is an obsolete, proprietary format that modern spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or Apple Numbers do not support out of the box. Users face immediate compatibility issues, and sharing these files with clients or colleagues usually results in "unsupported file type" errors.

To restore access to your data, you must convert it. For analyzing data in modern software, convert to XLSX or CSV. Note that complex legacy macros or highly specific Quattro Pro formatting may be lost during conversion, but raw cell data and standard formulas will survive.
