A .workspace file is primarily an XML-based project configuration file used by Proteus Design Suite, an electronic design automation tool developed by Labcenter Electronics. In other cases, it functions as a workspace layout file for Code::Blocks or Adobe Bridge. These files do not hold actual project data like schematics, source code, or images. Instead, they store user interface layouts, active file paths, and environment preferences.
The primary disadvantage of a .workspace file is that it is strictly bound to its specific software ecosystem. A Proteus workspace is entirely useless in Altium Designer, and a Code::Blocks workspace cannot be natively imported into Visual Studio. If the original software is uninstalled, the file becomes an orphaned text document. Furthermore, these files frequently break if the referenced source files are moved to a different folder.
Converting a .workspace file to another IDE format is usually impossible due to proprietary, undocumented XML schemas. Standard online converters fail because there is no universal standard for workspace metadata.
