About WMX files
The .WMX file is a Windows Media Redirector playlist. It does not contain actual video or audio data. Instead, it is a small XML-based text file that stores the URL or file path pointing to a remote media stream. Historically used by Windows Media Player, this legacy format was built by Microsoft to help servers initiate media streaming without forcing users to download massive files first. Users frequently encounter problems with this format because they mistakenly share or backup the 1KB .WMX file instead of the actual media file. When the recipient tries to play it, the file fails to load if the original streaming server is offline or the local network path is broken. Furthermore, modern web browsers and mobile devices do not support .WMX natively, requiring a $0 workaround to extract the link. Because this is just a pointer file, you cannot directly convert it into an MP4 or MP3 media file. You must extract the stream URL from the text. If you need to migrate the playlist to a modern media player, converting it to an M3U or PLS format is the best option. This file format is difficult to open or convert using generic tools because they attempt to process it as a video file, which causes them to crash. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view its text contents, and convert the playlist structure or extract the underlying media URLs if supported.

The WMX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WMX converter.
