Extract text from WLX files
To convert your WLX file to another format, you need Total Commander or other Plugin software.
To convert other file formats to the "Lister Plugin" file type, you need software like Total Commander or a similar tool.
The .WLX extension represents two completely different file types that cause significant confusion. Most commonly today, it is a Lister Plugin for Total Commander, a popular file manager replacement for Windows. These files are actually Dynamic Link Libraries (.DLL) renamed to .wlx. They allow Total Commander to preview specific file formats (like code syntax, databases, or rare images) without opening a heavy application. You cannot "open" these in a standard way; they must be installed or manually renamed to DLL for inspection by developers.
However, many users encounter .WLX files as artifacts from Windows Live Mesh (a discontinued Microsoft sync service). In this context, a file named document.docx.wlx is often an incomplete or "stuck" synchronization file. The practical workaround: If your file has a double extension (e.g., .jpg.wlx), try renaming it to remove the .wlx part to recover the original file. For Total Commander plugins, do not attempt to convert them to PDF or Word; instead, install them within the software to unlock their viewing capabilities.
