To convert other file formats to the "Configuration Export" file type, you need software like Widget Importer & Exporter or a similar tool.
About WIE files
A .WIE file is a configuration data file generated by the Widget Importer & Exporter plugin for WordPress. These files are used to migrate widget settings - such as menus, text blocks, and calendar placements - between different WordPress websites. Technically, a .WIE file is just a standard JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) file with a custom extension to identify its purpose.
Users typically encounter friction with .WIE files because operating systems (Windows, macOS) do not recognize the extension, making it impossible to double-click and open. Furthermore, the file is useless on its own; it requires the specific plugin to be installed on the destination site to function as intended. If the plugin is deprecated or the destination site uses a different theme structure, the data often becomes 'locked' inside the file. Converting the file to JSON or TXT allows users to view the raw data, manually recover text content from widgets, or inspect the configuration without needing a live WordPress installation.
For editing or inspection, convert to JSON or TXT. To restore the settings to a website, the file must be kept as .WIE and imported via the plugin interface.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WIE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted TXT, GADGET, WDGT and 8BP files.
