About WED files
The .WED file extension represents a classic case of file ambiguity, serving two completely different purposes that often confuse users. Most commonly (approx. 29%), it is an XML-based project file created by AnvSoft Photo DVD Maker.
The "Fake Video" Problem: Users often mistake this .WED file for a playable video. In reality, it is a tiny text file (often under 100KB) that acts as a "recipe." It contains the locations of your photos and music on your hard drive, along with transition settings, but it does not contain the actual photos or audio. If you email this file to a friend or try to convert it online, it will fail because the source images are missing. To convert this to a playable format like MP4 or DVD, you must open it on the original computer using Photo DVD Maker and use the "Burn" or "Export" function.
Legacy Documents: Alternatively (approx. 20%), a .WED file may be a legacy document or template created by Corel WordPerfect, specifically associated with "Wedding" templates in older DOS/Windows versions. These are standard rich-text documents. While modern DOCX editors like Microsoft Word do not natively support this specific extension, you can often open them by renaming the extension to WPD or by using LibreOffice, which maintains excellent backward compatibility for legacy formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your WED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WED Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WED converter.
