About WEBDOC files

A .webdoc file is a proprietary web document link or shortcut created by the Box cloud storage platform. It serves as a placeholder on your local system that points to a document hosted on Box servers, such as a Box Note, a Google Workspace file, or an Office Online document. When you sync your files using Box Drive, these files appear locally but do not actually contain your document data.

The primary disadvantage of the .webdoc format is its complete reliance on the Box ecosystem and an active internet connection. Because the file is merely a pointer, it is completely useless if you send it to someone without a Box account or try to open it offline. Standard online converters fail to process these files because there is no actual document text, image, or layout data hidden inside the file's code to convert.

Converting a .webdoc file locally to a PDF or DOCX is generally impossible. To get a usable file, you must open the link in your web browser and export the document directly from the Box web interface. However, this file format is notoriously difficult to inspect when you just want to know where it leads. If our analysis detects an embedded link, you can retrieve it without needing the Box desktop app.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WEBDOC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
