About WDT files

The .WDT file extension is primarily used for two completely different purposes: as a proprietary game world data file for Blizzard Entertainment games like World of Warcraft, and as a waveform data log file by software like Digilent WaveForms. Gaming .WDT files act as a master index for 3D terrain grids and map assets. Waveform logs store recorded electrical signal measurements. Because these files are strictly proprietary, opening them requires the original software or specialized community modding tools. The major disadvantage of the .WDT format is vendor lock-in. Game files are completely unreadable by standard 3D or text editors, and waveform logs trap your measurement data inside the Digilent ecosystem. Users frequently need to convert .WDT waveform logs to standard .CSV or .TXT files to analyze data in Microsoft Excel or Python. For gaming files, users want to extract the 3D meshes to standard formats. Because these are closed, proprietary binary formats, standard online converters will fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
