About WBMP files

The .WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) format is a 1-bit monochrome raster image type created for the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). Early mobile phones used these files to display simple graphics, icons, and logos over slow 2G internet connections. Because these devices had severe hardware limitations, the format was designed to be as lightweight as possible. You can open them using desktop image viewers like IrfanView, XnView, or the open-source editor GIMP. For more history, you can read about the Wireless Application Protocol.

Today, the .WBMP format is completely obsolete. Its biggest disadvantage is the total lack of color and grayscale support. Every pixel is either pure black or pure white. Furthermore, it uses no compression, meaning it is incredibly inefficient compared to modern web formats. Modern mobile browsers (like Chrome or Safari on iOS and Android) do not support rendering .WBMP files natively, meaning you cannot easily share or view these images on modern devices.

To make these files usable today, you must convert them. For web display and general archiving, convert .WBMP to PNG. PNG handles flat, hard-edged graphics perfectly and will compress the file significantly without losing any detail. Converting to JPG is also an option, though JPEG compression may introduce unwanted artifacts around the black-and-white edges.
