About W3G files
A .W3G file is a proprietary replay log generated by Warcraft III, a classic real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. It stores a precise sequence of player inputs, unit coordinates, and timing events rather than actual video data. The Warcraft III game engine reads this lightweight log file to resimulate the match in real-time. Because the format relies entirely on local game assets and engine calculations to render graphics, it presents extreme conversion challenges. The primary disadvantage is that .W3G files are proprietary, version-dependent, and completely unsupported by standard media players like VLC or web browsers. If the original game receives a patch or update, older .W3G files often break and become unreadable. Furthermore, sharing the file requires the recipient to own a paid installation of Warcraft III. Users frequently attempt to convert a .W3G file to standard video formats like .MP4 or .AVI to upload to YouTube. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack the game engine required to render the 3D environment. To convert the replay to a video file, you must open it inside Warcraft III and manually record the screen using capture software like OBS Studio. For analysis, this file format is difficult to open outside of the game environment. Our system can inspect the file headers to extract hidden internal metadata, such as map details, match duration, and player names, even if direct video conversion is not natively supported.
Convert.Guru analyzes your W3G file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The W3G Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our W3G converter.
