About VSL files

The .vsl extension is a classic example of proprietary file locking, most frequently encountered (approx. 61%) as an Encrypted Video Lecture distributed by educational platforms like Vsmart Academy. These files are essentially video streams (often H.264 or MP4) wrapped in a Digital Rights Management (DRM) layer. While this secures the content for the provider, it creates a frustrating user experience: you cannot play the file in versatile media players like VLC media player, you cannot cast the video to a TV, and you are often tethered to a specific, clunky software interface. Users invariably want to convert these to standard MP4 or MKV files to regain control over playback speed and device compatibility.

A significant minority of these files (15%) are totally different: they are Visual Lighting Design projects created by software from Acuity Brands. These contain complex 3D lighting data and photometry settings stored in a Microsoft Compound File format. The friction here is accessibility - viewing these designs requires installing niche, industry-specific software. For broad distribution to clients or contractors who do not own Visual Lighting, the best practice is converting the visual output to PDF for documentation or DXF for integration into AutoCAD.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VSL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XLSX, DLL, MP4, VCX, WIXLIB and PRO4 files.
