About VSCH files

A .vsch file is a Windows Vault Schema file, a critical system component used by Microsoft Windows to define the structure of the Credential Manager vault. These files dictate how passwords and secure tokens are organized within the system's encrypted storage. The Challenge: Users typically encounter these files in hidden directories like AppData\Local\Microsoft\Vault and attempt to open them to recover lost passwords. However, .vsch files are strictly schema definitions - not the passwords themselves - and are often binary or heavily obfuscated XML. They are locked by the operating system, tied to specific User SIDs, and offer no native way to be "read" by standard humans applications. Simply copying a .vsch file to another computer will result in an unrecognizable, invalid file. The Solution: For data recovery or migration, the practical move is to use the built-in Windows Credential Manager to export the actual vault data to a CRD file. If you are a developer or system administrator needing to inspect the raw schema structure for debugging, you can "convert" the view by opening the file in a hex editor or advanced text editor like Notepad++, though the content is primarily machine-readable metadata.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VSCH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
