About VSCH files

The .VSCH file extension is primarily a Windows Vault Schema file used by the Windows Credential Manager in Microsoft Windows. These system files define the structure and layout for how sensitive authentication data, such as usernames, passwords, and network tokens, are securely stored within the Windows Vault. They act as a blueprint for the credential resource schemas, including Windows NGC (Next Generation Credentials).

Users rarely interact directly with .VSCH files unless they are troubleshooting system errors, recovering data, or performing forensic analysis. The main disadvantage of this format is its highly proprietary nature. It is heavily integrated into the operating system and lacks native support outside of the Windows environment. Because it is a closed, internal structural file, it is completely unsupported by standard text editors, mobile devices, or web browsers.

Converting a .VSCH file is generally not recommended as it breaks the credential storage functionality. However, for forensic, debugging, or recovery purposes, users often seek to parse the schema into human-readable formats like TXT, XML, or CSV to analyze the vault's structure.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it relies entirely on undocumented internal Windows APIs to be read correctly. Standard online converters fail to process it because it is not a traditional document. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. We can inspect the file, display raw text or internal hex content, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying structure, partial viewing or data extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VSCH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The VSCH Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VSCH converter.
