About VPOL files

The .VPOL file is a Windows Vault Policy File, a critical system component generated by Microsoft Windows to manage security protocols within the Windows Credential Manager. These files define the rules and permissions for how credentials, passwords, and certificates are stored and accessed by the operating system and third-party applications.

The catch for users is that .VPOL files are proprietary system binaries, not designed for human readability or manual editing. Attempting to open them in standard text editors often results in unintelligible gibberish, and they are frequently locked by the OS, preventing simple copy/paste operations. Users often encounter these files when attempting to migrate user profiles or recover lost passwords, mistakenly believing the file contains the passwords themselves rather than the policies governing them.

For most users, the goal is to view the configuration data or migrate credentials. Since direct editing is risky and can corrupt user profiles, the best approach is often converting the file to TXT or XML solely for inspection purposes to verify header information or versioning. For actual password management and migration, users are better served by exporting credentials directly through the Control Panel or importing data into dedicated managers like 1Password or HashiCorp Vault, rather than trying to convert the raw policy file.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VPOL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VSCH, 1PIF, TLS and POL files.
