A .VPW file is a VoxPro Wave File utilized by VoxPro, an audio editing and recording system initially created by Audion Labs and now managed by Wheatstone. It is specifically designed for live radio broadcasting and commercial studio environments to handle quick voice edits and caller talk-over effects.
The major disadvantage of the .VPW format is its proprietary nature. While it is fundamentally built on the standard RIFF WAVE structure, it includes a proprietary chunk of metadata that stores all the real-time edits, non-destructive cuts, and effects applied inside the software. This means if you send a .VPW file to someone without a costly VoxPro license, they cannot hear your finalized, edited mix. They are locked out of the intended playback experience.
To ensure broad compatibility, you should convert these files to standard WAV, MP3, or FLAC formats. A well-known trick is simply renaming the file extension from .vpw to wav, which allows standard software to play the file. However, note that any conversion or renaming will only extract the raw, unedited original recording, entirely discarding the VoxPro-specific edits.
