About VOI files

A .VOI file serves two entirely different purposes in the digital world. It is either a VOI Group File used in neuroimaging to define 3D regions of interest on MRI or PET scans, or an obsolete Voyetra Voice File used by 1990s PC music software. Medical researchers historically used specialized tools like SPAMALIZE (built using IDL) or BrainMaker to map out these complex brain volumes. Conversely, early computer musicians used software by Voyetra to save and trigger short sound clips.

Users attempting to access a .VOI file today face significant hurdles. The Voyetra audio format is a closed, proprietary relic completely unsupported by modern operating systems, smartphones, or web browsers; you cannot simply play it in standard media players without legacy emulation. The neuroimaging format, while often just a text-based coordinate list, is highly specialized and practically useless outside of its native research pipeline. Because the audio format relies on undocumented, legacy compression, standard online converters usually fail to process it.

We recommend converting Voyetra .VOI files to universally supported audio formats like WAV for lossless archiving or MP3 for general playback. For the medical data variant, converting to TXT or CSV allows the raw mathematical coordinates to be read in any modern spreadsheet software, though native 3D visualization capabilities will be lost outside of specialized software.

This file format is difficult to handle because it requires either obsolete audio decoders or niche scientific software to interpret correctly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the exact parameters of the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the binary or text data, and show internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is - if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded codec, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The VOI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VOI converter.
