About VMO files
The .VMO extension is shared primarily by two distinct, legacy formats that often cause compatibility headaches for modern users. The most common variation is the Virtools Media Object, a compiled 3D resource file used by Dassault Systèmes 3DVIA software (formerly Virtools). These files contain interactive 3D behaviors, logic, and assets intended for playback in the now-obsolete 3DVIA Player. Because they are compiled binary files designed for runtime execution rather than editing, they act like a "black box"; you generally cannot open them in 3D modelers like Blender or Autodesk Maya to extract geometry. The key problem here is obsolescence - browser plugins for Virtools are dead, making these files effectively inaccessible without legacy virtualization. For archiving these interactive scenes, the most pragmatic solution is often running a legacy viewer environment and screen-capturing the output to MP4 or MKV video formats.
The second frequent use case is the Siemens Voice Memo format, generated by older Siemens mobile phones (e.g., S55, SL55 series) from the early 2000s. These are proprietary audio containers that wrap low-bitrate voice recordings. Modern media players and operating systems do not support the specific audio codec used in these VMO files natively. Users attempting to retrieve old family messages or notes will find they simply fail to open in standard tools. To make these recordings usable again, they must be converted to universally supported audio standards. For preservation and playback on modern devices, converting these VMO audio files to MP3 (for portability) or WAV (for uncompressed archiving) is essential.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MODEL, INP and CGR files.
The VMO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMO converter.
