About VMM files
The .vmm extension primarily serves two distinct legacy and proprietary roles that create significant compatibility friction. First, it represents a Visual Mind Map created by Visual Mind. These files store complex hierarchical data, nodes, and formatting in a proprietary binary structure. The main problem users face is that .vmm maps cannot be opened by standard web browsers or generic mind-mapping tools like MindManager without specific import filters. To share these diagrams with colleagues who lack the software, you should convert them to PDF for static viewing or JPG/PNG for embedding in presentations.
Second, .vmm refers to a 3D Movie Maker project file from the mid-90s Microsoft software. A common misconception is that this file is a video; it is actually a project database containing instructions for characters, sounds, and scenes. You cannot upload a 3DMM .vmm file to YouTube. To view these today, you must essentially "convert" them by recording the playback to MP4 or using specialized community tools. Finally, in automotive contexts, a .vmm file may contain vehicle measurement data from Ford IDS or PicoScope, which requires conversion to CSV or XLSX for analysis in spreadsheet software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VMM file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Visual Mind or similar software from the "Mind Map & Project Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to VMM, try Visual Mind or another comparable tool in the "Mind Map & Project Storage" category.
The VMM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMM converter.
