The .vmm extension primarily serves two distinct legacy and proprietary roles that create significant compatibility friction. First, it represents a Visual Mind Map created by Visual Mind. These files store complex hierarchical data, nodes, and formatting in a proprietary binary structure. The main problem users face is that .vmm maps cannot be opened by standard web browsers or generic mind-mapping tools like MindManager without specific import filters. Second, .vmm refers to a 3D Movie Maker project file from the mid-90s Microsoft software.
