To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary Voice Recording" file type, you need software like Panasonic Voice Editing or a similar tool.
About VM1 files
The .VM1 extension identifies two distinct, legacy file types that often frustrate users due to their proprietary nature.
1. Panasonic SD Voice File (Most Common): Found on older Panasonic IC recorders (e.g., RR-US series), these files typically use the naming pattern MOB001.VM1. They contain audio encoded in a proprietary ADPCM format (specifically TRC, ADPCM2, or G.726) wrapped in a custom container. Critically, these files cannot be played by standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player. They require specific Panasonic software to decode and export the audio stream.
2. Connectix Virtual Game Station (VGS) Memory Card: A virtual memory card file used by the now-defunct Connectix VGS PlayStation emulator. These files store game saves (blocks) from the late 90s. Modern emulators like ePSXe or DuckStation use the standard MCR format and cannot natively read VGS images without conversion.
Conversion Advice:
For Audio: You must use the Panasonic Voice Editing software (Premium or Standard edition) to open the file and export it as a WAV file. From there, you can convert the WAV to MP3 or AAC using any standard converter.
For Games: Use a specialized tool like MemcardRex. Open the .VM1 file and save it as a generic MCR or MCD file to access your old saves on modern emulators.

The VM1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VM1 converter.
