About VEXE files

A .VEXE file is a quarantined "Virus Executable." It is simply a standard Windows executable (EXE) file that has been renamed to include a "v" (for virus) to prevent the file from being accidentally run on a computer. Antivirus programs - such as Windows Defender or Malwarebytes - automatically change the extension when they isolate malicious software. Security researchers also manually rename files to .VEXE to safely share and store malware samples without risking accidental execution. You generally should not convert or attempt to open this file unless you are deliberately analyzing malware in an isolated sandbox or virtual machine. The primary disadvantage of the .VEXE format is that it cannot be executed by the operating system - which is a deliberate security measure. Reverting the file to its original format will immediately make it a dangerous, active threat again. If you are a malware researcher, you might want to convert the file back to EXE for dynamic analysis or package it into a password-protected ZIP archive to safely transport it. Standard online converters and email clients will universally block these files because handling malware locally is dangerous. This file format is difficult to safely open because the original application is inherently a malicious payload. We can securely analyze the internal Portable Executable (PE) headers, extract readable strings, and identify the underlying embedded formats so you can perform static analysis safely.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VEXE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
