Extract text from project files (VEX)
To convert VEX projects to another format, you need iBwave Design or other Database software.
To convert other file formats to the "RF Component Data" file type, you need software like iBwave Design or a similar tool.
The .vex file extension primarily serves as a proprietary data container for iBwave Design, the industry standard for designing in-building wireless networks. These files function as Component Exchange packages, encapsulating detailed technical specifications for antennas, cables, and splitters (including gain, attenuation, and 3D patterns) to be imported into the iBwave database.
A major downside for RF engineers and supply chain managers is the proprietary lock-in: a .vex file cannot be opened or audited without a valid, expensive iBwave license. This makes it difficult to verify Bill of Materials (BOM) data or share component specs with stakeholders who don't have the software. Users frequently need to convert these files to CSV, XLSX (Excel), or XML to view the raw data, perform cost analysis, or integrate with other inventory systems.
Secondarily, .vex files are associated with VEX Robotics (specifically legacy or export formats from VEXcode). These contain project source code (C++ or Python) and configuration data for VEX IQ or V5 robot brains. Students and educators often struggle to share these files because they require the specific IDE to view the logic. Converting these project files to PDF (for grading and documentation) or plain TXT/CPP (for code review) is a common requirement to make the work accessible outside the lab environment.
