About VDD files
A .VDD file is primarily a proprietary Dashcam video data file created by VicoVation driving recorders. These files are typically used to store continuous recording data, which internally consists of sequential JPG frames and metadata rather than a standard video stream. A secondary, less common use (about 4% of files) is as a developer definition file for Visual DataFlex by Data Access Corporation.
The main disadvantage of the .VDD dashcam format is that it is strictly proprietary. Standard media players like VLC or default operating system viewers cannot read it. This causes immense frustration when users need to quickly share accident footage with police officers or insurance claims adjusters, who will refuse to install obscure, outdated manufacturer software just to view a video.
To make this evidence usable, you must convert the .VDD file into standard formats like MP4 or extract the embedded JPG image sequences. However, standard online converters fail to process .VDD files because they do not understand the undocumented wrapper structure. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, only the original VicoVation software can natively parse the full event metadata. Even if the wrapper is unrecognizable to standard tools, our deep-file analysis can detect the underlying embedded JPG formats, making viewing or extraction possible without the original software.

The VDD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VDD converter.
