About V01 files
A .v01 file is a distinctively ambiguous format that typically serves one of three purposes: a legacy CAD drawing, a split archive volume, or an electricity meter data log.
1. CAD Drawing (BiCscad)
Historically, this extension is associated with BiCscad, a CAD application developed by Bicograf. These files contain 2D/3D vector designs similar to DWG or DXF. The primary friction here is proprietary lock-in; modern tools like AutoCAD or BricsCAD typically do not recognize the .v01 extension natively. Users often need to rename the file to DWG or convert it to PDF for viewing.
2. Australian NEM12 Data
In the energy sector, .v01 files often contain NEM12 (National Electricity Market) interval metering data. While the standard format is CSV, these logs sometimes carry the .v01 extension to denote 'Version 1' or a specific dataset. These are plain text files containing consumption rows. The best solution is to open them in Microsoft Excel or a text editor to analyze the usage data.
3. Backup & Split Archives
Frequently, a .v01 file is simply 'Volume 1' of a multi-part archive created by backup utilities (like legacy Conner Software) or file archivers. In this case, the file cannot be opened alone; it requires the accompanying .v00, .v02, etc., to be extracted using tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR.

The V01 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our V01 converter.
