The .UBZ file format is primarily an interactive whiteboard document used by OpenBoard, an open-source software suite utilized in schools and universities. Under the hood, .UBZ files are standard ZIP archives containing XML data, SVGs, and embedded media assets like images or audio that are mapped to individual whiteboard slides.
Because this format is strictly proprietary to the OpenBoard ecosystem, it presents major sharing challenges. Non-users cannot open .UBZ files natively on standard operating systems or web browsers. If you share this file with a colleague or student, they will likely be unable to read it without installing the full software package. This forces users into a closed ecosystem.
The most practical target format for sharing is PDF, which flattens the interactive whiteboard pages into a static, universally readable document. However, interactivity and embedded audio will be lost. Alternatively, converting or extracting individual slides to PNG or JPG works well for archiving visual notes.
