A .tzst file is a standard TAR archive compressed using the Zstandard (zstd) algorithm. It is frequently used for high-speed server backup archives by hosting control panels like Plesk and backup software like Duplicati. The format essentially combines the file-grouping capabilities of a Tarball with the extreme compression speeds of the open-source Zstandard algorithm developed by Meta.
The main disadvantage of the .tzst format is its severe lack of native operating system support. Default file managers like Windows File Explorer and Apple's Archive Utility cannot open or extract it. If you send a .tzst backup file to a client or colleague, they will likely encounter an error. To open it locally, users are forced to install specialized third-party archivers like PeaZip or configure command-line tools.
Converting .tzst to a highly compatible format like ZIP or .TAR.GZ solves this accessibility problem. While a ZIP file might be slightly larger, it guarantees that anyone can open the archive without installing extra software.
