About TSR files
A .tsr file is most commonly a Time-Stamp Response generated in accordance with the IETF RFC 3161 standard. These files act as digital receipts, containing a cryptographically signed token from a Trusted Timestamp Authority (TSA) that proves a specific piece of data existed at a precise moment in time. They are essential for non-repudiation in digital signatures, ensuring that documents like contracts or code were signed before a certificate expired.
A common frustration with .tsr files is that they are binary ASN.1 encoded containers. Users cannot simply verify the timestamp or view the signing authority by opening the file in a standard text editor like Notepad; doing so results in unintelligible garbled text. Furthermore, these files are often "detached," meaning they must be mathematically paired with the original data to be validated. Professional tools like OpenSSL or Microsoft SignTool are required to parse them, which creates a high barrier for non-technical users.
To make the data accessible or compatible with different systems, conversion is often necessary:
- For Analysis & Debugging: Convert to TXT or XML to decode the ASN.1 structure and read the timestamp and issuer details in plain English.
- For System Compatibility: Convert binary DER-encoded .tsr files to Base64 PEM format for easier file transfer or certificate chaining.
- For Surveyors (Alternative Use): If you are working with geospatial data, your file may be a Topcon Total Station Report. In this case, converting to CSV or DXF is necessary to import measurements into CAD software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TSR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted TRS, RAR, TIF, DOC, JPG, DOCX, ASPX, PVK and P7X files.
The TSR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TSR converter.
